Herne Germany

Herne is a city in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. It is located in the Ruhr region, exactly between the cities of Bochum and Gelsenkirchen. Like most of the other cities in the region Herne was a small village until the 19th century, but its growth was due to the start of coal mining and steel production. Currently Herne also includes the towns of Wanne and Eickel. In August the Cranger Kirmes is celebrated, the second largest festival in Germany, with around 4,500,000 visitors per year. Its origins date back to the fifteenth century. Officially begins the first Friday of the month of August.
