Essen Germany

Visitors will be gladly surprised when visiting Essen. Most people expect a grey industrialized cityscape, marked by a very strong industrial activity, but visitors will soon realize that this city is a residential town with several museums, lined with green areas, and lively cultural life. This city deserves a visit if just for its cathedral. The internationally famous Essen Cathedral was built on an Ottoman crypt, dating from the 10th century. Inside the crypt, objects of incredible value were found, such as the oldest known sculpture of the Virgin Mary and the lost crown of Otto III. Essen is home to a variety of museums. The Museum Folkwang, internationally acclaimed, features works of famous artists such as Renoir, Eduard Monet, Gauguin, Van Gogh and others. The Ruhrlandmuseum is devoted to the social history of industrialization. Authentic documents allow visitors to learn about the way of life of working families and of the big bourgeoisie of the early 20th century. Essen is proud of its industrial past and has a lot to show for it, but the city is not stuck in the past and is looking forward. The city has transitioned into a cultural hub, so much so, that it was proclaimed European Capital of Culture on behalf of the whole Ruhr area in 2010.
